Steven G. King is the Acting Division Director of the Contingency Planning and Incident Management Division (CPIMD) within the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Office of Infrastructure Protection. His division ensures that the Department's infrastructure protection mission is integrated into the nation's unified approach to domestic incident management. In response to potential threats or actual events affecting critical infrastructure, CPIMD's National Infrastructure Coordinating Center (NICC) shares timely, relevant, and accurate information with critical infrastructure private sector owners and operators, DHS senior leadership, other government agencies, and nongovernmental organizations. He is the principal author of several congressionally mandated reports and the DHS Office of Infrastructure Protection's Best Practices for Infrastructure Protection guidebook.
Prior to joining DHS, Mr. King taught explosives for the Department of Justice and conducted physical vulnerability assessments and developed emergency response plans for the Pentagon, US House of Representatives, US Capitol Police Board, and critical facilities across the nation.
Mr. King was selected because of his experience as the chief Fire Marshal of a city in northern Virginia. As a sworn law enforcement officer, he led the city's office responsible for handling hazardous materials incidents, explosives, and fire investigations. Mr. King has 20 years of experience as a firefighter and EMT-Paramedic, including as a station captain and chief officer. He still remains active as a volunteer fire officer and nationally registered EMT-Paramedic in northern Virginia.
Mr. King holds a Master of Science (MS) degree in Biodefense, a Master of Business Administration (MBA), and an undergraduate degree in Emergency Services Administration. He is currently a doctoral (PhD) student conducting counterterrorism research and completed the Naval Postgraduate School's Homeland Security Executive Leaders Program. In addition to numerous firefighting, emergency medical services, law enforcement, and hazardous materials related certifications, Mr. King is board certified in security management as a Certified Protection Professional (CPP®) and is a Project Management Professional (PMP®).
He is a member of the ASIS International's Oil, Gas and Chemical Industry Security Council and the Business Continuity Management (BCM) Technical Committee.
